What is a Noh mask?

I once asked a Noh performer, “What is a Noh mask?”

 

He answered:

“It is a magical tool that lets you become someone — or something — entirely different.”

 

A Noh mask is not simply a face to be worn.
It is a device of transformation.

 

Lilico Aso began studying traditional Noh mask carving in 2018.

 

Rooted in classical techniques, her practice connects Noh masks with contemporary art, face research, and the question of how a face comes into being.
