What is a Noh Mask?

I once asked a Noh performer, “What is a Noh mask?”

 

He answered:  

​

“It’s a magical tool that lets you become someone—or something—entirely different.”

 

There are many different kinds of Noh masks.  

 

For instance, female masks differ in age, personality, and role—each carved to embody a unique presence on stage.

 

As a Noh mask maker, I take on the role of crafting these tools of transformation.
