This original mask is inspired by Amabie, a yōkai said to appear in times of epidemic. Amabie is a half-human, half-fish creature believed to dwell in the sea. Its appearance is recorded in an Edo-period kawaraban woodblock print (held by the Kyoto University Library). The body below the neck is covered in scales, with three divided tail fins. A sharp beak, diamond-shaped eyes, and fin-like structures where ears would be mark its otherworldly form. According to the kawaraban, Amabie foretold impending calamity and declared: “Draw my likeness and spread it to the people.” The act of utsusu—to copy, to transfer, to imprint—is fundamental to the making of Noh masks. In this work, the physical characteristics of Amabie are translated into the formal structure of a Noh mask, giving rise to an Amabie mask shaped through traditional techniques. In Noh masks, golden eyes signify beings that do not belong to this world—presences beyond the human realm. For this reason, Amabie’s eyes are also rendered in gold. This Amabie mask is both a face of prayer, emerging in times of fear and uncertainty, and a harbinger whose very appearance foretells disaster. It stands in the ambiguous space between incantation and omen. Once Amabie has appeared, normalcy has already been left behind. It is at once a symbol of purification and the embodiment of calamity itself. This mask is not a mere reproduction of folklore. Through the act of utsusu, imbued with prayer and ritual potency, this work seeks to give Amabie a new face— one that speaks to the present.
